PART ONE: COMICS PERSONALITY TYPE

Name: Peter N. Trinh
Age: 21
Sign: Aquarius

Introverted or extroverted?
In-between, really. I was pretty introverted before in high school. Now, I’m just an extrovert that is scared shitless of strangers.

What are your top 5 procrastination tools?
1. Internet
2. Video games
3. Doodling
4. Looking up/trying to play guitar tabs
5. Reading comics, webcomics (which loops me back to square one)

What gets your juices flowing?
My music, my comics, my movies, and my biggest influence: my friends.

PART TWO: COMICS CONSUMER

What kind of comics do you like to read?
Webcomics galore (apparently, my del.icio.us account says I follow(ed) 111 webcomics). I also read large comics (graphic novels) and trade paperback collections. I’m not the type to buy single issues unless it’s TPB.

What kind of comics do you dislike?
I’ve shyed away from Japanese manga. It’s not much I can relate to.

When were you first introduced to comics?
I remember loving the Garfield cartoons and comics before, but I stepped away from them around the time I was finishing high school. The first time I was actually introduced to comics that I started to follow was in my first year in university. My buddy Craig introduced me to Good-bye, Chunky Rice and Blankets by another Craig, Craig Thompson.

What were some of your first comics?
Blankets by Craig Thompson.
Megatokyo by Fred Gallagher.
Lost at Sea by Bryan Lee O’Malley.

When did you first get “the spark”?
There were two points, actually.  Each with about a couple of years in between them:

1. Finding Megatokyo, based on a circulating ad from some other location. To this day, I still read it despite its extreme changes in story-arcs. It’s what inspired me to read, write and draw webcomics.

2. After reading Blankets. Definitely. I didn’t know about any field of comics outside of superhero and geek-specific comics.

What is your favorite animated movie?
Disney/Pixar’s WALL-E. Right now it’s my favourite movie, period.

What is your favorite anime series?
I haven’t watched anime in a long time, but Trigun still plays as being one of my greatest influences. Nowadays, I mostly follow the animated features from Hayao Miyazaki and Satoshi Kon, the latter being the favourite of the two.

PART THREE: COMICS CREATOR

What kind of comics do you make?
Mini-comics, webcomics, and the occasional doodle. My most popular comic would have to be my student-newspaper comic Impression, by Jim & Lan.

When did you first start making comics?
Believe it or not, I’ve only been drawing since sixth grade. Never really took my drawing skills seriously until Grade 10 in high school. So technically, I didn’t start drawing what I thought to be significant art (including comics) until I was 15 years old.

What are your favorite comic artists right now?
Too many to list, but I’ll give a nice spectrum at least: Craig Thompson, Hope Larson, Bryan Lee O’Malley, Nina Matsumoto (space coyote), Josh Lesnick, Mike Krahulik/Jerry Holkins, Kean Soo, Raina Telgemeier, Brian Wood, Becky Cloonan.

What are your main influences in comics?
I write what I know, and that doesn’t just include biographical, real-life stories. My work revolves around movies, cartoons, and video games I watched as a kid (and now)! Star Wars films, the Metal Gear Solid and Max Payne series, and the list goes on and on. My biggest childhood influence in story arcs and character creation would have to be action director, John Woo. My parents were fans of him once, so everyone in my family got to grow up with them.

Artistically?
Like many other comic artists out there, my artwork is pretty Western, with an Eastern flair applied to it. It almost looks like a cross between O’Malley and Brian Carroll. Although, according to a customer I had at a cartoon portrait table I was doing, I draw like Pokémon.

What is one of your favourite artists/comics that nobody has heard of?
Hands down, Fallen by Yuko Ota. While her webcomic is on indefinite (or possibly permanent) hiatus, her artwork on her blog always inspires me! You should check her artwork/comic out!
